Codeine is a centrally acting opioid narcotic analgesic (pain reliever) and antitussive (cough suppressant) derived from the opium poppy plant [1]. It is indicated for the clinical management of mild-to-moderate acute pain [1] when non-opioid medications (such as paracetamol or ibuprofen) are ineffective or cannot be tolerated.
